Brushing our teeth is the most effective method to protect oral health. The food we consume every day cause the formation of a thin and sticky layer called plaque on our teeth. This plaque contains bacteria and, if not cleaned, can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Therefore, it is of great importance to brush your teeth for the proper duration and technique.
1. Choose the Right Toothbrush: Use a medium brush without applying excessive pressure.
2. Hold the Brush at a 45 Degree Angle: Place the brush at a 45 degree angle to your gums. This angle allows the brush to clean plaque from the teeth and gum line.
3. Brush with Circular Movements: Instead of making quick back and forth movements while brushing, brush with gentle circular movements.
4. Brush Each Area Equal Time: Brush the four main areas in the mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left) for equal time, approximately 30 seconds each, for a total of two minutes. Don't forget to brush your tongue too.
5. Brush All Surfaces of the Teeth: You should brush not only the front surfaces of the teeth, but also the back and chewing surfaces. Brushing may be incomplete, especially since we cannot see the back teeth directly.
6. Pay Attention to the Frequency of Brushing Your Teeth: You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, for two minutes.
7. Use Dental Floss: You cannot clean the area between two teeth just by brushing. For interdental cleaning, you can use dental floss or an interdental brush in large spaces to clean food residues or plaque.
8. Use Mouthwash: Rinsing your mouth with mouthwash after brushing and flossing helps to clean bacteria and food residues. Using mouthwash alone does not replace brushing. Establishing correct tooth brushing habits is the first step you and your children should take to have a healthy oral structure. Don't forget to brush your teeth and enjoy a healthy smile!
